The Taj Mahal in Agra, India, is one of the most beautiful monuments in the world. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, as the mausoleum of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal, after her death in 1631. Fatehpur Sikri is only 37 kilometers away from the Agra and the famous Monument City in Uttar Pradesh. This town is completely built in red sandstone and has been recognized as one of the world heritage site. Fatehpur Sikri presents the best example of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture and at the same time Mughal architectural splendor. There are many exciting attractions in Fatehpur Sikri such as Buland Darwaza, Diwan-khanai-khaas, The Treasury, Turkish Sultana s House, Palace of Jodha Bai, Panch Mahal etc. Fatehpur Sikri also comprises of a numerous palaces, halls and Masjids in typical Mughal fashion.


In the centre of a peaceful garden at Sikandra, 4 km northwest of Agra, lies the sandstone and marble tomb of Akbar. The mausoleum represents Akbars philosophy and secular outlook blending Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Christian motifs and styles.


Agra Fort, designed and built by Akbar in 1565 A.D., built with barricaded wall of red sand stone0, it houses the beautiful Pearl Mosque and numerous palaces including the Jahangir Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, Macchhi Bhawan, Nagina Masjid, Meena Bazar, Moti Masjid, Sheesh Mahal, Musamman Burj where from Taj Mahal is visible in all its beauty from one side of the fort.


To the north of the fort, on the opposite bank of the Yamuna lies the tomb of Itmad-ud-daulah, built in memory of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, Jehangirs wazir. Also known as the baby Taj, it was the first Mughal structure totally built from marble and first to make extensive use of pietra dura. The place is the least visited of Agras three great monuments.
